Appropriate behavior at the company Christmas party

The company party is a work event. It should be treated as a work event. Ranks don't change. The boss is still the boss, and so on down the line. You are simply dressed up and have a bigger chance of making stupid and regrettable mistakes, unless you come prepared.

Leave your work complaints and worries at the door. This is not the time to discuss so things. This is a social event so don't get mixed up in any gossip or work discussions that belong in the office or the human resources department. Be nice.

Don't have more than one drink. I don't care how well you think you handle your liquor, it's just a bad idea. Have some club soda with a twist of lime if you feel you must carry a glass around. Don't make an issue of it. Just order non-alcoholic drinks. Save your drinking time for when you get home and describe everything and everyone to your date.

Dress appropriate to the occasion. This is a work function and you should remember that when choosing your wardrobe. Feel free to look glamorous, as long as it is a modest look as well. You don't need the tongues wagging about what you wear; yes this applies to both sexes.

Be gracious. One of the easiest ways to remember to be gracious is to pretend like you are in a room with your grandmother and her friends. Be kind, be thoughtful and be respectful of those around you.

Can you do all these things and still have a good time? Sure, as long as you enjoy at least some of the people you work with it should be a snap. Ask questions so they are able to brag about themselves and their children. It works in every social situation. Spend more time listening than you do talking and you will not only enjoy yourself more, but also perhaps learn some interesting things about your co-workers.
