Travel destination: Singapore.
I was on a military post in Germany when I happened to walk into a small PX and noticed a brochure of two naval officers and their female companions sipping on mixed drinks at a gorgeous hotel with a beautiful red sunset in the background. The tropical setting seemed so alluring to someone who'd spent many hours in sub zero weather. I became infatuated with brochure and decided to walk inside the military travel agency where it was posted outside the door right next to the PX and make some inquiries.
I had a great deal of leave time that I needed to dispose of or loose it so, I booked a trip
to Singapore. I was told by the agent I wouldn't need a visa because they could issue me a temporary visa that they give to navy personnel when they visit. A month later I was on my to Singapore.
I was grateful that nearly everyone spoke English. I stayed at the Daichi hotel and made friends with the band members and met several Australians while I was there. The hotel gave me a military discount which gave me a room at a five star hotel for $15.00 a night. I enjoyed myself thoroughly, basking in the tropical weather. The people were very friendly and everything was inexpensive.
I went on several tours of some of Singapore's famous landmarks to include the infamous "Singapore Sling" hotel. Unfortunately, I became inebriated and didn't see the best part of the hotel. I did manage to visit a crocodile farm, Buddhist temple, sample exotic cuisine and found a McDonald's. I had a great time and hope that one day I can revisit Singapore to see the sights that I missed while I was there.
