Youth mentoring

by a.b.

Lets face it ladies and gentleman; the youth of today are still in trouble. It's becoming harder and harder to talk to our teens as society continues to pressure them into uneasy situations. One very important topic that leads our youth into these uneasy situations is sexual intercourse at a young age. Many of our teens today lack knowledge about sexual intercourse and yet they still engage in it; some as young as 12. Not only are they having sex at unbelievably young ages, they are practicing unsafe sex. Yes, we have places that supply teens with contraceptives like birth control pills, but that does not stop the children from having sex at a young age, and birth control does not prevent STD's or AIDS. There is only one solution. Our youth need to be educated better; mostly by their parents or guardians. Many parents find it difficult to address the topic of sex with their child, but it is worth the effort. Yes parents, I understand that it is hard, but trust me it will make all of the difference. I once saw a mother on a talk show grieving for her daughter who slept with many men and contracted HIV. Her mother was devastated and inconsolable. If only she talked to her daughter about sex, she wouldn't have to face the circumstances that she does now. We need to make our youth understand that sex is not to be fooled with. Parents, you should start to talk to them in the preteen years.(Between 10 and 13 yrs). It doesn't stop at those ages. You should continue to talk to your kids about these matters. I've seen talk shows where young girls got pregnant and were left stranded without money or an education. For the rest of their life, when they were suppose to be young and grow up, is now dedicated to raising an infant, and sadly they will never have the chance to be young again. Parents, if you feel that you completely cannot talk to you child, their are programs that you can enroll them in. You can call your local Planned Parenthood centers, or you can ask perhaps a health teacher in the school that your child attends. Whatever you do, this education has to take place, because the more it doesn't, the more we will see or hear about these devastating stories of a stolen teen life.
