Poetry: Self-image

Am I Forgettable?

I'm the shy type.
A good person lurking,
Under a quiet exterior.
Did you bother looking for the real me?
I was just under the surface.
There, because it's my nature.
Secretly, inside crying out for you to notice me.
You might have found a friend,
Had you not written me off so quickly.
Forgotten about me in an instant.
Too self-important for a second look.
I guess I can't blame you.
Did you know any better?
One day I'll get over my bashful complexion.
I'll grow out of this self-conscious temperament.
Become brave, demand people's attention.
I hope you shed your holier than thou' posturing in time.
All I can say is until then, forget you.
