Revised January 14, 2009:
One has to always be organized and to plan ahead even if there is no indication of a serious risk. We are never too prepared and its important to think about emergency situations and plan ahead in the event something does occur. The first thing I would suggest to people is to research and make certain you are informed. This can be accomplished by reading books on survival training and preparedness including obtaining information about scenarios about survival techniques.
I would also suggest to make certain you have First Aid knowledge and renew your certification as it expires. There are many new innovated material and tools in this area therefore, it's important one is current with the information. For the reason, the skills may be required to save a life including your own or your family.
Moreover, it would be necessary to create home made survival kits, I have practically three or four around my home. Living in the country has not only reinforced in having a kit but I have one in the car and at home. In the home I have one in the bathroom, closet, and kitchen. It's not necessary to spend thousands of dollars for the kits,Canadian Tire and other department stores such as Walmart or surplus army stores sells them already packaged and for under a $100. I bought the car kit for approximately $30 but I also made a homemade kit which is housed in a blue plastic bin, which I purchased from Home Depot for $15. I have included blankets, change of clothes, candles, dry cereals snacks, first aid kit. I am in the process of obtaining a generator for the car and home including an oxygen mask and heart fibrillation kit. Make sure your kits are labeled; I have colored stickies on mine so they are easily assessable. Remember always stay ahead and think ahead, the worst thing is not being prepared, which in most cases can mean the difference between your survival and death.
