Gift ideas for grandparents: How to restore and frame an old family photo

Would you like to bring an old photo back to life for your favorite grandparent? It's a wonderful gift idea and not difficult to do. You have several options depending on your budget.

FIX IT YOURSELF In order to fix a photo yourself you will need access to a scanner and photo software. If you have a digital camera you more than likely have all you need to do this project yourself.

First: Scan your photo. It is recommended you scan your photo at its original size at 300 dpi. If you are going to enlarge the picture, scan at a higher dpi. For example, to double the size of your photo, scan at 600 dpi. Adjustments can also be made on your scanner to adjust for graininess and tonal quality.

Second: Most digital cameras and/or scanners come with photo enhancing software many with a light version of Adobe Photoshop. If you wish to purchase software for future use your options are only limited by your budget. Prices range from $20 to $650. I've used Picture It! with great success. Free software is available on line and if you have time you may find one that will do what you need it to do. Try HP.com.

Most photo programs allow you to remove scratches from your digital copy, enhance the quality of the picture and fix damaged areas.

PROFESSIONAL RESTORATION If you don't have the necessary software or are not in to negotiating them there are many studios that will do it for you. You may have one locally but many will work with you via Fed Ex and Email. Search keywords: "Old Photo Restoration". If you are going to repair the actual photo make sure you check the company's reputation and reliability prior to handing over your treasured possession. Most will work with a copy of the original so as not to risk damaging it. You will need to contact them directly for cost information.

FRAMING - Again, if you have the funds there are professional frame shops that will advise you as to the best choice of frames and matting for your photo from an artistic standpoint and then complete the project for you. This can be costly. Michael's craft store, if you have one near by, has a frame shop and 50% off coupons on framing quite often in the Sunday paper flyer.

If you wish to frame it yourself and are using the original photo, it is very important that you use only acid free or archival quality paper next to your photo. Also use acid free mat board rather than cardboard behind your photo. Regular cardboard will cause your photo to deteriorate over time. Also, use spacers to keep your photo from touching the glass. We've all had a photo stick to the glass over time and it destroys the photo.

The selection of a frame is a personal thing. If you do not consult a professional you will need to trust your own judgment. Bring the photo with you to the store and experiment and remember a frame should not be the focal point but should enhance the photo and serve as a back drop.
