The most constructive path in dealing with borderline individuals is to examine how not to interact with them. Many people in society including those in the medical professions are walking on egg shells around individuals with this diagnosis. This stems from a fear of sending the inflicted off into a self destructive episode while taking everyone around them along for the ride.
The mainstream idea of how to treat the borderline individual is to avoid giving attention to there antics. Mental health professionals ignore the emotional outburst, poor coping, and overall destructive ways in belief that it is attention seeking and will only further the patients behavior pattern. The main issue that borderlines struggle with is a fear of abandonment. How is it that giving no attention for inappropriate or appropriate behaviors is the answer. Attention should greatly be brought to appropriate behaviors and coping strategies accomplished. Ignoring the accomplishments will make the individual feel there is no point in trying. It seems to the patient that no one notices improvements in there treatment.
The borderline individual struggles with interpersonal situations. Many deal with borderlines inability to cope interpersonally with angry and frustration. Professionals have ,out of frustration, made hurtful comments. Borderlines have spent many years with inappropriate coping skills. It takes a much longer time breaking these habits. Patients and strong boundaries are the main way to deal with borderline individuals. Borderline individuals need someone who will work with them and not give up. The last thing Borderlines need is more abandonment.
