The annual Christmas party, the time of the year where we all look forward to getting together with our co-workers and bosses for a night of fun and food, for most companies performance acknowledgments as well. It can be for the most part either a great time or the worst depending on how you conduct your self. Hopefully I can give you some idea's that will help you survive the night with out any embarrassing incidents.
The first and most important part to consider is if the party is formal or informal. This will dictate how you should be prepared to dress for your company's party. You don't want to be showing up at a formal dinner in a pair of jeans and t-shirt, this would obviously ruin your night. If its informal you should still dress casually but tastefully. Show your company you care about your personal image as well as theirs, for most times the party will be held at a rented space, hotel or banquet facility.
You should most definitely make every effort in showing up at the beginning of the party, there's nothing worse than showing up during or after the meal. You wouldn't be late showing up for your job would you? So why would you be late for showing up for the party? When arriving make sure you spend your time acknowledging every one there, do not spend most of your time sucking up to your bosses, trust me they don't like it. I should know, I am one.
Be happy and have fun, after all thats what it is meant for isn't it? Don't sit there and talk about work issues, or people you don't like. This is my number one pet peeve when one of my employee's comes up to me and starts talking about the job, for god sakes it's a party not paid time on the clock. there's plenty of time for break room gossip when you get back to work, not that I am encouraging it. Get to know the people you work with if you already don't, meet their families and share some laughs.
During dinner do not be overly loud or picky. I was almost floored last year when one of my assistants commented on how awful one of the employee's dishes that she prepared and brought for us was. I was embarrassed and livid the he even ever made the comment. If you don't like something that is being served, simply do not eat it and keep it to your self. Some of the company dinners are catered, the same goes for this type of dinner, if you don't like it or think it wasn't expensive enough, keep it to your self and remember, it was free.
If there is alcohol present your number one mistake at the party is to get inebriated
