If for some reason you find yourself in the position where you will need to buy a gift for a business associate that you barely know, you have a couple of options. You can either seek to get more information about that person or you can buy them a neutral gift that would be appropriate for just about anyone. I
If the person is someone you work with and they have friends in the office you could always ask the friends what that person enjoys, and then buy appropriately, however if the business associate is a customer or vendor that you are buying something for you will need to get them something neutral and not all that personal That doesn't mean that you can't get them something nice.
One gift that think is always nice for just about any one in December is a nice pair of gloves. You can get a very nice pair of gloves for around $20.00. It is a nice gift for a man or a woman, it is relatively in-expensive but yet elegant and most people need to wear them especially in the colder states.
Another nice neutral gift is nice umbrella, not just any umbrella but an umbrella that will fold up nicely to fit inside any purse or briefcase.
Another thing that may be appreciated is a nice pretty yet neutral desk clock. Something that is elegant but not to ornate or decorative, something that is pretty that can go well with any decor.
There are other gifts such as food baskets that work well for pretty much anyone, but you need to be careful with some of them. There are people who have food allergies to things such as nuts, so you should not send anyone a basket of anything that contains nuts unless you are sure they are not allergic to them.
It used to be that a nice bottle of wine, or some good whiskey or bourbon made a nice gift, but I think you need to be careful about such things. The person you are buying for could be a non drinker, or possibly even a recovering alcoholic so this may not actually be a good gift for someone who you don't know very well.
Of course a gift certificate works well for just about anyone if you get them one from either a store that sells just about anything or a gift certificate that will work any where at a specific mall. Of course the problem with gift certificates is that the receiver knows the value of your gift.
Another thing that works nicely for this time of year is a Christmas decoration of some sort, either a pretty ornament, or a nice boxed set of ornaments. All you need to know about the person is if they actually celebrate Christmas. You don't need to know their exact beliefs or religious affiliation just that they do celebrate Christmas, and therefore would not be offended by a Christmas related gift.
If the person lives in a different area of the country or even further away you could always send them a gift of a food specialty from your state. For instance Chicago style pizza, there are companies in Chicago that will mail a frozen pizza to anywhere in the country. Find out if the most popular local food businesses in your area will ship their products.
I think any gift that is neutral and could be used by pretty much anyone is fine to give just about anyone.
