Various definitions have been attributed to the computer in recent years. What a great invention it has been. The computer has been the source of many calculations, researches, security enhancements, etc. done in the world today and has come to stay. Who wants otherwise?
Anyway, in having a plan to buy this electronic machine as a gift for anyone, irrespective of status or age, there are some important things to consider because computers do come with different configurations, features and qualities. These properties matter a lot.
I think the first thing to consider should be speed of the computer. These days, people give little patience to things like slow computers when it comes to functionalities and so on. People expect the computer to act like soothsayers or accurate predictors in the ways they function. A reasonable part of the world's population unconsciously perceive the computer as a great machine that has come to salvage the delays in man's activities. It really should be fast. The things used to measure computer speeds are basically the Memory and Processor Speed. For memory, 512MB and above should be what you should look out for. As for the processor speed, it should above 800GHZ.
Also, there are company computers that are cloned. Cloned computers are computers that are assembled by ordinary people or individuals. They buy are the components and parts and assemble. This type of computers is usually cheaper than the "branded" or "uncloned" computers. Well, they have a down side. Since they are not assembled by a company or corporation, they offer no warranty, so they cannot be "accurately or completely" sued legally when there is a problem. Think of that. Your gift recipient might not want something like that, you neither.
Finally, the computer should be a large storage facility - meaning the hard disk or drive space should be large. 40GB and above will do.
