Over spending is becoming more and more a pressing problem in our society. With the media and public suggesting how we should look, where and how we should live and what car best represents us, it is sometimes hard to find the balance between affordability and our desires. Willingness of financial institutions to let us use money we have not earned yet is a convenience most would not want to miss but it also makes us vulnerable targets for living above our means.
If you see a problem in the spending habits of your partner, you need to find out where the problem lies. First determine if it is simply your perception of over spending because you are more frugal or if it is actually causing you financial troubles. Be honest with yourself and avoid making excuses for either party during your search.
If you are not experiencing financial downfalls investigate further why his or her behavior concerns you. You may subconsciously feel jealous because your partner fulfills his or her wishes without your input or you worry about your future more and would rather save now for later. Everybody has different goals in life including financial planning. Some may forget to plan and just need a reminder. Once you find what the problem is have a conversation about it with your partner. Be honest but also understanding. Listen to what he or she has to say and see if you can find a reasonable solution to make all happy.
If your partner's spending is causing financial hardship however it is time to take steps to battle this condition. Have an honest talk with your partner, speak your mind but also listen. You are fighting a battle but your foe is over spending not your partner. Consider your partner an ally, without him or her you cannot win the fight. Be prepared to state facts such as account statements and bill amounts as well as to convey your feelings such as fright and anger.

Find out what you and your partner feel most comfortable with and establish contact. Most over spenders know they have a problem and know they need help.
