The word that comes to mind when I think of Johnny Cash is "Legend". This man experienced life at the very core, being personally challenged on all levels and he still managed to rise above his demons, find true love and create and perform some of the most memorable music that will always have an audience.
The magical "I Walk The Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", "A Boy Named Sue", "Don't Take Your Love To Town" and the list does go on, and on. The unfortunate reality of the entertainment business is that a "normal" lifestyle on the road is akin to "Hens Teeth". Nowadays when artists "Go on the road", it usually means they are going to hop into their Lear Jets, but back in the early days it was more of an endurance trip and combined with a wife who wasn't all that enamored with his dedication to making music, children to consider and the consequent meeting of minds with June Carter he slid into depression and hit the low road of amphetamine use and like many, fell by the wayside. Luckily, Johnny was a man who looked within, and although it was a rocky road with June Carter in terms of his dependency and the fact that he was married, the old adage "Behind Every Good Man, There is a Great Woman" persevered and through June and other family members he was on top of his addiction for awhile.
When you look at his career you can't help but have respect for his achievements. He had such good company when starting out, as in Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins. Also teaming up with Bob Dylan on "Girl from the North Country" and of course "The Highwaymen" with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofesson. So many fantastic moments he has given us, through his music. Many thanks Mr Cash!
