Odd jobs for college students

by Kimberly Anne Marie

Created on: December 01, 2007

There are a handful of obstacles in the way of college students maintaining even a part time job while in school, so they resort to the alternative of odd jobs to make up for their financial loss. Even without a car, students can access a variety of ways to make extra money.

Before jumping into the world of odd jobs, the student must recognize what his or her skills are:

1. Are you exemplary at any task or creative project? This could be an outlet for your odd job fortune. There are a few great ways to make money off of your artistry. My younger sister recently started making jewelry. It's actually a very sophisticated and wonderful technique that takes some time to learn, but when it is mastered, it can result in some big cash. You could even set up your own website advertising your jewelry or take orders from your friends and family, especially as the holiday season approaches. This could work with any creative project you have mastered.

2. Traditional odd job work has a tendency to be either completely boring or a chore, but it can make quite a bit of money. Lawn care, babysitting, and office work are the typical traditional temporary jobs, but why not offer your services at unique times of year? For example, why not offer your services to a busy family to mail out their Christmas cards for them. Many families never get their cards out because of how busy the holiday season gets. How easy would that job be? Sitting in front of your TV and writing on cards and envelopes.

3. However cliche or ridiculous sales representatives from AVON or Mary Kay can be, the college student can actually make a little bit of extra cash by becoming a representative. Jewelry companies now exist like AVON that employ representatives. With a business like this, you can market yourself, choose your own schedule, and determine how much you will make. A lucrative choice for this type of business for the young woman is Mark. It is an offset of AVON specifically targeted for young women. I personally sell Mark and am able to make a few extra bucks now and then for spending. To find more information visit www.meetmark.com

4. Try on campus employment. With busy class schedules it's often hard to juggle a job and school, but with an on campus job you can work on homework and get paid at the same time. Although lots of jobs on campus are work study, many of them are hourly positions too. The great thing about campus employment is that taxes are not taken out and hours are very flexible.
