Are you allergic to a "real" Christmas tree? Do you hate the mess made by a "real" Christmas tree? Using a fake Christmas tree may be the only option for you and your family. But what about the environment? Many companies now are advertising or at least stating on the box what their tree is made of. Looking on the internet for more information about artificial trees and their impact on the enviroment, I was unable to find out much about what the actual trees, stands and poles are made from. I noticed that the shipping or merchandising cardboard boxes were made from recycled paper and the lights on some of the trees (especially those from www.treeclassics.com were energy saving bulbs that might take less energy than a typical strand of lights. However, I believe that it is not the type of tree you use that will impact the environment as much as the types of ornaments, garland, lights and decorations used. There are many recipes for homemade ornaments that are great for families and children (such as the cinnamon applesauce ornaments recipe found at www.homemadecountry.com). Also various types of garland are environmentally friendly such as fruit garland, popcorn strands, scrap fabric and recycled materials garlands. If you have children, I believe it is important to have them involved in the creating and decorating of a tree. Healthy relationships between families are as imporant as a healthy earth for us to live on.
