Timeless holiday music is something that everyone in the family can enjoy, but when it comes to seniors, it is especially important to pick music that brings back the feeling of Christmases past. Many of the Christmas albums released by today's recording artists just don't fit the bill. Where then, can you turn for music for mom and dad, or grandma and grandpa?
Unless you have an amazing record/CD store in your area, skip the mall, Target, Best Buy, and any other brick and mortar store. None of those places will carry anything worth purchasing. In this instance, internet shopping is the way to go. Older Christmas music just doesn't sell enough, sadly, to be sold anywhere but from a distribution warehouse. When searching for the right music, consider your audience. Most seniors will prefer a mixture of Christmas classics, in a more traditional orchestral arrangement, or sung by a traditional 'crooner' (Bing Crosby comes to mind).
A great place to start is an album called Joy To The World, by John Williams and the Boston Pops. The CD mixes classical orchestral arrangements of traditional Christmas songs with some beautiful choral accompaniment. It's great for background Christmas music, too, and the musicianship is very high caliber. If your seniors are old enough to be fans of the Big Band era, you might want to check out In The Christmas Mood, from the Glen Miller Orchestra. Here, Christmas favorites are arranged to a nice swing sound. Not only excellent for seniors, this album makes for great dance music for any Christmas cocktail party.
When the whole family is together for the holidays, make sure to pick music that your older family members can enjoy, too. The bonus is that this classic holiday music is some of the highest quality and most memorable. With a little effort, you can recreate the magic of Christmas Past through music.
