Sewing projects: Home-sewn holiday gift ideas for your mom

Home-Sewn Gifts

Remember your old finger-paintings that Mom proudly displayed on the refrigerator? Nothing brings joy to a mother's heart like a homemade gift from her little one. Turns out, some things never change.

Here are some grown-up homemade gifts that Mom will love.

Cushion Covers:

With an endless selection of beautiful fabrics available, you are sure to find just the right material to match the sofa or bedroom.

Materials: All you need is pre-made cushions from your craft, sewing, or department store, and fabric.

Directions:
* Measure your cushion all the way around. Now add 8" to the length, and 2" to the width.
*Cut your fabric to the correct size.
* Hem the two short ends of the fabric by folding over " then 1 " and sewing.
* Place the fabric right-side-up in the table, and fold over the long ends over so that they overlap by approx 4" in the middle of the cover. You are essentially making an envelope for the cushion.
* Sew each long end with a " seam.
* Turn the whole "envelope" inside-out, so that the seams are hidden and the right side is showing.
* Slip the cushion into the cover.

These are great because you can wash the covers separately, or replace them whenever you wish. You could even make a new cover for every occasion!

Memory Quilt:

Bring back happy memories of when her children were little, by displaying pieces of your old blankies, dress-up clothes, and even that adorable pair of overalls.

Materials: Quilting bating; twin, double, or queen-size. Nice flannel fabric for the backing. Crochet cotton. And the memory fabrics cut into squares for the top.

Directions:
* Lay out all the pieces you wish to use on the table or floor and arrange them how you wish.
* Sew the top pieces together to create a large sheet.
* Layer: Flannel (wrong side up), quilting bating, and your top sheet (right side up), and pin together.
* Tie the quilt together with the crochet cotton by placing a single stitch on each or every-other square and knotting the ends.
*Remove the pins.
*Fold over and pin all the edges twice, (1/2" Then 1 ") so there are no raw edges showing.
*Sew this hem on all four sides of the quilt.
*Surprise your Mom with this sentimental gift!

VARIATION 1: Now, with all the new things you can do with digital pictures, instead of a quilt of memory fabrics, you could create a photo quilt. Print your desired photos directly onto the squares, or put them on using iron-on transfers. Arrange these photo squares how you like them, then continue as above.

VARIATION 2: Get your children involved by having them decorate the squares with fabric paint to create their own pictures and special messages for Grandma.

Not really into sewing? Try these two projects with no sewing required!

Fleece Scarves:

Fleece ("polar fleece" or "sno-fleece") is a wonderful medium, because it will not fray, thus, no sewing required!

Materials: Fleece in any color or pattern you wish.

Directions:
* Simply cut the fabric to the length and width you desire for your scarf.
* Make a fringe on each end by cutting slits into the fabric.

And you're done!

Tree Skirt:

Once again, fleece makes this a fun, no-sew project.

Materials: One large piece of fleece in a solid color. Various smaller pieces of fleece or craft felt in a variety of colors. Hot glue gun.

Directions:
* Create the skirt by cutting the large piece of fleece into a large circle. Cut an X shaped slit into the very center of the circle. (This will go over the tree-stand.)
* Cut out your smaller pieces into fun shapes. Snowmen, snowflakes, stars, angels, etc
*Use the hot glue gun to position these however you wish on the tree skirt.
