My first experience of Linux was when I came across a free load up edition on a magazine cover disk a few years ago. In the most part I found it easy to use but at the time I cold not get the drivers for my printer and internet so I stayed with windows. I am now tempted to go back to Linux as I'm not a lover of Windows and hate Vista.
Some of the benefits of Linux
*If you buy a new computer it works out cheaper to buy one with a Linux operating system.
*It's source code if free to everyone under the GNU General Public License. Meaning developers can tweak it to suit their needs
*A retail boxed copy of Linux can cost half the price of a Windows Operating System.
*You can download some distributions at no charge from their website.
Those curious to see the capabilities of Linux can download a live CD version called Knoppix from the Linux site. This is the version I first tried and will give you an insight into what Linux is capable of. As it runs from the CD there is no need to install it on to you computer. This means there is no backing up of data and wiping of your system to load it up.
Linux is worth a try if you are looking for a new operating system for you PC and even if your not.
