There are a number of factors one should always take into consideration when buying a computer, whether for themselves, or as a gift. However, when purchasing a computer as a gift, these factors are even more important. First and foremost is the efficiency of the computer itself. Secondly, what software does the computer come with? And finally, what is the price?
Efficiency is the most important thing to take into account when buying a computer. How fast can it run? Can it read CDs and DVDs? Can it write CDs and DVDs? These are all factors that play into the overall scheme of the computer. In general, you should think about the person you are buying the computer for. If they know very little about computers, they won't be needing the latest and greatest computer, but they might appreciate a computer that's good with pictures and movies. If you're buying a computer for a gaming buff, you might want to look into "Dual-Core" or "Quad-core" computing. Also, the amount of RAM is a paramount consideration.
Second, what software does the computer come with? Wal-Mart just debuted a $199 PC. Owing to it's price, it doesn't include Microsoft Windows, but rather a variant of Linux. For someone who has never used a computer before, this could be a good thing, owing to the simple design of this Linux variation. However, if you're buying a computer for someone who was trained on Microsoft Windows, you should also look into computers that include Anti-Virus and Microsoft Word.
Finally, you should keep the price in mind. Don't go out of your budget for a computer, and don't buy anything that can't be fixed if it breaks. While that brand new desktop might look like it's an amazing computer, does it really earn that $1500 pricetag? Shop online and at various stores before you buy, and don't ever allow yourself to make a hasty decision.
