Poetry: Death

a box of worms
a shake of earth
a hole dug in her reality
We prayed for love
and a little more time
and we held on through catastrophe

a drunken fool
a beat up car
a man made into enemy
We prayed for him
and a little white lie
and we prayed for his entire family

a rusted lock
a bolted door
a shovel never seen before
We prayed for us
and a bit more justice
and we held on through the advocacy

a baseball bat
a broken head
a man falls to the ground
We prayed he'd spend
everyday of his life
in the same pain that we had found

a shutter here
a whisper there
a mass of tumorous consistency
We prayed he'd walk
right out those doors
so we could show him just what we think

a frightened man
a little boy
a change of heart for the we
We prayed for him
and prayed for him
and prayed for him to die

a calming hush
a judgement made
a hundred prayers went unanswered
We prayed for the wisdom
and we prayed for the serentity
and the courage that never came

a courthouse step
a crowd unrest
a man running out the back
We prayed for the chance
yes to hunt him down
and the power to convict him
