I have tried several different diet programs, and I find that the best thing I have learned is to have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. In the past several months, I have usually included a variety of at least five different fruits and vegetables every day, and I have lost twenty-three pounds. A few times, for instance, during Thanksgiving, I have had too many high-sugar and fat dessert foods, like pie, ice cream or cake, and I have begun to gain back the weight. I've finally learned that as long as I fill myself up on the fruits and vegetables at all of my meals and walk for at least thirty minutes per day, I will lose weight. I also have had fantastic blood test results since doing this.
It's also important to look up recipes online or to invest in some low-fat, low-sugar cookbooks to learn how to satisfy that longing for muffins, breads and cakes that are reasonably healthy and won't cause weight gain. For my recent wedding anniversary, I made a raisin and applesauce cake that was "out of this world." Even though my husband and I ate more than one serving of it, our weight did not go up at the next week's weigh-in. It was delicious!
Many diets are too detailed to live with, and once you stop planning, weighing and journaling for every meal and snack, your weight goes up. Also, many people don't make sure they get six to eight glasses of water in daily. It's important to use whole grains instead of white flour, and we substitute a little sugar substitute instead of any sugar. Many no-sugar dessert recipes use raisins and/or unsweetened applesauce or bananas.
I must tell you that eating this way is very satisfying. There's really no reason not to feel comfortably full. The next time you take a walk, bring along a fresh piece of fruit. You will have plenty of energy to enjoy the walk, and you will get one of the pieces of produce in your daily diet.
I recently read that if you just walk thirty minutes per day and don't even change your diet, over several months time you should lose several pounds. My husband proved to me that this works because while I was journaling, counting points and measuring foods, he just ate a healthy diet with lots of produce, and we both took daily thirty-minutes walks, and he lost fourteen pounds in about three months. So, if you don't want to be bothered with all that extra work of following a diet, try that.
Another important switch that my husband and I have made is to eat less meat, and more fish and chicken. We also substitute egg whites for the majority of our omelettes. That reduces the calories and eliminates cholesterol. There's no easier way to lose weight than to eat more produce, whole grains, drink plenty of water and walk. Try it, and you'll see!
