Fitness for children: Tips for great workouts for kids

In a world full of gaming systems, the Internet, TV, and iPods, it seems that good old-fashioned physical exercise has been abandoned among today's youth. And it is not a coincidence that obesity rates have steeply inclined. Kids need exercise to stay healthy. The younger children are when they get into the habit of being physically active, the more likely they will continue that habit as they get older.

So sign your child up for a sport that interests him or her. It is important not to push children into a specific sport because it's what you want them to do. This will only make your kid harbor resentment towards you. And not to mention that when a child is forced to play a sport that he does not want to participate in, he is less likely to pay full attention to what is going on around him and therefore more likely to get hurt.
Kids naturally have an abundance of energy. Take advantage of it. Sports like soccer and basketball are great for burning off excess energy. Swimming is great for kids who may be out of shape as it is a great low-impact workout. And don't forget about gymnastics and dance, which help build muscle and coordination and increase flexibility.
In today's fast-paced society, take a time-out and go to the park with your kids or take the dog for a walk as a family. Go ice skating or put on music so everyone can dance while they do their chores. Be a good example. If your kids see that you value exercise as a part of a healthy lifestyle, they are more likely to adopt that approach as well.
