so much, slightly eccentric, and very proud. Be sure to visit it.
3) Now out of the UK and on to our nearest neighbour - "La Belle France". From the designer boutiques, and nightclubs of "Gay Paris", to the millionaire yachts off the South Coast at Cannes and Nice, France is another country where it seems like you are travelling through many different places in one day, so different is the North to the South, or the East to the West. If I had to choose one place it would have to be Paris, a sophisticated and elegant place that I feel everyone should visit at least once. Stroll down the Champs Elysees, look in the boutiques in the famous Boulevard de Faubourg St. Honore, or just go to one of the many small markets in the suburbs where they sell everything from beautiful materials for dressmaking, to fresh fruit, fish, meat and vegetables. Marvel at the Arc de Triomphe, smile at Mona Lisa in the Louvre, have a day out at the Races in the Bois de Boulogne - there is so much to do. And - of course - don't forget the food - and the fine wines. Paris is certainly the place for a gourmet.
4) Not so far from France, but proud of it's own culture and independence, is the tiny Principality of Monaco. Home of the famous Casino, last resting place of the lovely Princess Grace, and reputed to be the place with the most millionaires per square foot. Sadly now, the glamour of the past has been somewhat tarnished. Most people living in Monte Carlo are tax exiles, and perhaps more people who have earned their money from shady business dealings than from an honest day's work, or even than from the Casinos. The place still has a glamour though, however faded. Watch the Changing of the Guard at the Pink Palace, window shop in the boutiques (you would have to find a friendly millionaire to actually be able to buy something in there!) and relax as you look out across the blue Mediterranean.
5) Next, onto Rome - city of the Ancients. It is so full of history, and culture. Go to the opera or one of the open air music concerts there in Summer. Walk through the gardens and admire all the statues - most of them really do date back to the Roman Empire thousands of years ago. See St. Peter's Square, Vatican City, the Cistine Chapel, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain - they really are all as beautiful as you read about. And don't forget to eat a genuine Italian pizza or ice-cream when you are there. Rome can be hot, noisy and crowded in the peak tourist seasons, so try and go out of
