The hard thing with making a list of the Top Ten places to see in Europe is to narrow it down to ten! From the wild and beautiful Hebridean Isles off the coast of Scotland, to the cosmopolitan cities of Paris, London, Madrid and Rome, there are so many different places to choose from. However, as a proud European I am willing to give this challenge a try. So here are my Top Ten!
1) First I have to put my own home city of London - how could I leave her out? In the old folk songs, they said that the London streetrs were paved with gold, and people came from all over the British Isles to seek their fortune. Now the net has gone wider, and my beloved city is a magnet to people from all over the world, who want to share in our own special brand of culture, history, art, fashion, and excitement. I could wax lyrical for hours about my city, which is so full of history and culture, that even if you live a lifetime here, you could never see and explore all of it. Churches well over 1,000 years old, ancient statues, Royal Palaces, Museums, everywhere reminders of our great traditions and history going back thousand of years. And did I mention the shops, markets and boutiques, the nightclubs, Bars, and theatres, and our great sporting venues from Wembley to Wimbledon? But most of all it is home. A city with a warm heart and an indomitable spirit that I have found nowhere else. In the last War they spoke about the stoical East Enders and their "Spirit of the Blitz", - no cowering and hiding for us Londoners, we hold our heads high, keep a stiff upper lip, and fight back with pride and humour. So if you come to London you will see more than a city, you will see a living spirit of vitality. That is why it has to be my Number One.
2) Just one overnight train journey away from London, is my Number Two destination. The stunning Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides. A small but beautiful place, now connected to the Scottish Mainland by a bridge, but still in most peoples' dreams as the romantic Misty Isle, reached only by ferry. The Skye Boat Song starts with the words "Speed Bonnie Boat like a bird on the wing................." and many tourists still prefer the boat trip to this lovely place, instead of the more prosaic drive. Marvel at the majestic Cuillin Hills, visit the enigmatic Old Man of Storr, have lunch in a fishing village like Portree, where life has seemingly stopped still for hundreds of years. To me the Misty Isle encapsulates wnother aspect of the Britan I love
