If you end up with buying your next car while you still own your current one, you'll have to keep up insurance on both cars since it is illegal to operate a vehicle without it and I don't doubt that someone taking the car on a test drive would rather not be pulled over for a car with expired registration and no insurance. If you're currently making payments on your car, you very well might wind up with making two car payments at a time. Not everyone can make two car payments and you don't want this adventure to damage your credit rating by not being able to make timely payments.
Finally when the deal is done and you have check in hand, make sure to take care of the transfer of title properly. You don't want to be getting fines on a car you no longer own, and you can't fully depend on the next owner doing so, especially if it were my ex-brother-in-law. But then I'd definitely not want to sell a car to him anyway.
Trading in your car can save you quite a bit of time, hassle and potential headache. Sure, you won't get as much for your car if you trade it in, but it can save you a lot of trouble in the long run.
