Sometimes one religion has many similarities to another. You hear what one believes and it reminds you of yours or another you have heard of. Other times people believe that a religion has similarities to another when it does not. This is the case with Wicca and Catholicism. Before today, while I have heard countless people compare Catholicism to paganism in general, I have never heard this claim. Catholicism and Wicca are two completely different religions on opposite sides of the spectrum. The only similarities are in Holy Days, both their timing and practice. However, Catholicism did not get this from Wicca. I will explain further by examining both religions and how this cannot be so.
First off Catholicism is a set religion. There are no true variations. It's true that some incorporate in beliefs that are not taught and are against what the Church teaches, but that is not true Catholicism.
Catholicism is monotheistic. That is there is only one God. The belief in the Trinity does not negate this. The trinitarian belief is that this one God has three parts, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is much like H2O has three forms - water, ice, and water vapor. No matter which form you are dealing with it is still H2O - or in the case of Catholicism, God. To worship anything else is considered a sin.
Catholicism also teaches that there is a Devil. He is an evil being who was once an angel thrown from Heaven. To that matter, there is a Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory - the place one goes to be purged of the residue sins leave behind. Sins are violations against God and His Law. Catholics also believe that people are born with Original Sin that was passed down from Adam and Eve's first transgression.
Catholics believe in one Baptism. Baptism is when one is purified from their sins. It is a Sacrament. This means that one receives Grace through it. Catholicism teaches that it can be done several different ways. On one level there is that one can be Baptized by water, blood, and desire. That means that if one was not Baptized in the normal manner but died a martyr, that is for God, they are Baptized by blood. A similar principle applies when one wants to be Baptized, but dies before they are able. This is Baptism by desire. On a second level, Catholics do not believe that you must be dunked in order for it to be valid. You can be, but you can also have the water poured or sprinkled over you as well. Catholicism also teaches that this can be done as babies if the parents intend
