How to keep fish from jumping out of the tank

I never had a problem with fish jumping out of the tank until I acquired Jack. The most important way to prevent jumping is to use a lid or top piece on your tank; if you have a larger tank, the top can be very handy because most of them have a light inside.

As soon as we noticed he was still jumping, we immediately checked the tank to make sure nothing was wrong with the water, food, pump, etc. I would especially recommend checking your tank vitals if more than one of your fish are jumping! Its obviously not an isolated problem.

If the tank isn't the problem, check the fish that is jumping to see if he has any signs of diseases common in fish. Bouyancy is a result of many diseases, and you can easily compare symptoms to diseases at http://www.fishdoc.co.uk/ The website or a pet store employee should be able to direct you to a medicine to treat your water/fish. It should take away the bouyancy (which could be causing the jumping) AND protect your other fish.

A larger tank could also be a remedy if there are too many fish or the jumping fish has simply outgrown his tank.

If none of these work - they didn't for us - watch the fish's behavior more closely. Our fish seems to jump as a show of dominance to the other fish, or to demand food when we walk by and its past feeding time. Jack has been jumping for two years now - he's happily in a large tank, very healthy, and our tank works fine. The only suggestion I have left is to ensure your tank is fully covered on top to prevent the fish from jumping out, and to relocate your tank to somewhere without carpet so the fish doesn't splash all over it!
