Amazingly the vast majority of Representatives in Washington DC,
who have power over this decision, send their children to private
schools. Even the most liberal ones. So this says a lot about
the true value of an education from a socio-economic level.
The school voucher system which allows a student to go to
any school they are accepted is a horrifying prospect to

many in our educational system. It would weed out schools that
are dysfunctional, unprofitable and most times just a babysitting
service. The voucher system would also shine a light on grades and
intelligence (the Bell Curve) based on the student, but also behavior.
Most parents do not want to send their children to schools that promote
accelerated learning, tradition or even parochial tenets if the experience
or accreditation is going to be diluted by students who did not fit that
school's guidelines for achievement.
If your school system has a 55% drop out rate, sending your child
to a more competitive or accelerated program may do more harm than good.
It may affect that school's numbers of graduates and test scores as well
as holding up a mirror on your own child's achievement or lack of it. Not
many parents are accepting of that.
I believe in the voucher system because I feel it shines a light on why the
whole school system in this country needs to be revamped. With the great
leaps in technology today, I believe every student can learn and be taught
in a variety of different ways. One student can learn more from a computer
terminal than the back of a classroom. Another student can accelerate because
their classroom has a smaller number of students and they receive more attention
and specific instruction. I believe in a mentoring program, unavailable in most
schools and necessary for students who are affected by the chasm created
by socio-economic differences.
I believe that a student can pick and choose a school closer to home. I believe
that all students should be able to get the best education possible. But
unfortunately that education is mired in bureaucracy and the fallacy that
we all learn the same. Let the children go to the school of their choice and
then shine the light on the fallibility of the educational system as a whole.
