How to get back to basics and know God

by Bernadette Jasmin

Created on: November 28, 2007

There are many voices out in the world that say, "come here and I will tell you who God is." I bet you can travel throughout the world and find hundreds of them. There are also the voices that tell you, "You must be crazy to believe in God." So if you find yourself in either of these situations what do you do? You are at an impasse in your life and would like to know how to get to know God. So how do you go about it?

Sometimes the best answers to questions are the simplest ones. The first step in any journey is a plan and most plans need to be simple and direct to work. It takes meditation and contemplation before you can exercise that plan. You need to ask yourself are you looking to know the truth or are you looking for something that just fits your lifestyle? A journey to God takes energy and sacrifice. If it was easy wouldn't everyone be one of faith and one religion. Obviously there has to be some choices made.

So if you are looking to know God obviously you already have a belief system and recognize that God exist. You have a foundation of faith and belief in one God. So you can cancel out the voices that say there is no God.

So on your list you can put as number one.

1. There is one God.

The second step is to humble yourself enough to begin the journey. Many adults, like children fear the condemnation of their peers. They fear looking bad therefore they do not try to get to know God. To gain a true knowledge of God you have to be able to step out of your mental box. In this case humility is the next step to knowledge.

So now you have two items on your list.

2. It takes humility to know God.

A basic theme in most religions is to communicate with God. That is usually done through prayer. So far you have discovered that you need to believe, be humble, and address the Lord in prayer. Now how do you address a being that has created worlds and galaxies and accepts the appellation of "Father". I would think that God should be addressed with the utmost respect. So you would not use language that is obscene or disrespectful. Not only that, you would be address him not as your common companions, but as a dignitary.

So number three on your list should be prayer and I would also include address respectfully.

3. Reverent Prayer.

I addressed God as a him. Mind you in the majority of circumstances we usually address him as "Father" as far as Christian beliefs are concerned. According to this system of understanding we begin our prayers with Heavenly Father. For any kind of communication
