Feng shui tips for the living room

There are many feng shui tips which can help to turn your living room into an auspicious, friendly and uplifting area that will be a joy to spend time in.

The following are guidelines which you may choose to incorporate into your living room design to achieve the benefits of harmonious placement.

1. Paint the walls either a warm, light earth shade such as sandy beige, or a subtle pastel color. This will provide a good sound base for the addition of accent colors through the use of furnishings.

2. Clear away any clutter and keep the floor clear of items. This will result in unrestricted movement of positive energy, or 'chi'.

3. Make your living room approachable by keeping its entrance clear and thus providing easy access into the room.

4. Use rounded and organic shapes as these are thought to be more in harmony with nature and will be more healing to the eye and so to the soul.

Round tables, as opposed to square ones, suggest good communication and a level of equality for the inhabitants in the room.

Square tables have pointed edges which are said to release hidden poison arrows. This can cause negativity and feelings of unease. Therefore they are to be avoided.

5. Keep all wall hangings, including paintings, at eye level. Again, this is said to be easy on the eye and to help create a well balanced atmosphere of harmony.

6. A small water fountain will provide the energy of water and add its soothing sound as it falls.

7. As the living room is a busy area you can introduce a clock onto the left wall, also known as the dragon wall. This will stimulate good energy by the movement of its workings and hands as they turn. This is thought to be auspicious.

8. Let any natural light flood into the room during the day by keeping the windows and their sills clean and clear.

9. Have the windows open for at least half an hour per day to keep the environment fresh and free from stale air or energy.

10. Arrange furniture into a rounded or hexagonal shape as this creates balance and harmony.

11. Have lamps situated in any dark corners to keep the atmosphere in the room a happy one and use yellow toned, subtle lighting.

12. The couch and chairs should be comfortable so that you can relax and not have to think of discomfort whilst seated.

13. By adding green plants you will bring growth and energy in to the room. Plants can also help to keep the air free from toxins which are found in many cleaning products and which pollute the atmosphere.

Ferns and palms are favored in feng shui, and amongst
