Chess like any other game is only a pass-time activity. While it may be useful in teaching some strategic thinking, there is only so much that it can teach you. After a certain point - it becomes a total waste of time.
Anyone who is truly intelligent will be successful at life and things that matter; things that are real. They may also be good at chess - but chess reveals intelligence, it does not create it. If the person that is capable of curing cancer spends all of their time playing chess, we may never have the cure.
Chess and all of the rules created for the game are arbitrary - while there was a great deal of time and thought put into designing the game - it is not perfect. If you are playing a game of chess and decide to change the rules slightly for variations sake - there is nothing wrong with that as long as both sides agree. It is the agreed upon rule system that gives it any credentials at all. Thus it becomes a "how do I manipulate the given set of rules to out-think my opponent?" type of game. Which applies to all facets of business logic and rules of society. But it is the ability to understand and use situations to your advantage that makes you a good chess player.
It's a fun game, but like any recreational activity it only provides a break from reality. Other than that, it's pretty much useless.
