Feng shui can be utilized to make small spaces seem far larger and more harmonious. The key to balancing the energy of a small room is to work with natural elements.
Letting natural light flood into the small space can add positive energy and warmth. This can be done by the use of windows, and if possible, a small room can benefit from a skylight area.
Further increase natural light in the winter months, when days are darker, by adding full spectrum daylight bulbs which put together all of the colors which make up natural light, to create a feeling of well being and calm.
Keeping colors in the small space light and bright will add to this effect and give the illusion of a larger space. Pastel colors will work well on the walls and if you aim to be productive in your small space a blue ceiling representing the sky will do the trick.
Keep any furniture light. When it is made of wicker or bamboo it helps to add to the principle in feng shui of bringing the outside in to a room. This has the added effect of grounding the room and bringing a down to earth atmosphere and warmth due to the element of wood which the furniture is made of. Heavy, dark furniture is to be avoided as it will add weight and intensity to a small space which can be overbearing.
If you have a desk or a bed in the room then it should be kept in the command position. This is where you can see the door and windows from where you sit and so acquire a comfortable feeling of safety and of being in charge.
If you have a small space and yet a high ceiling then you can add round-leafed hanging plants to lift your energy and to utilize space above you. The plants will also draw the eye upwards and make you feel that you are in a larger space than you are
As clutter is a no no in feng shui, and especially in a small space, choose furniture which has double uses such as a table with storage space underneath. This will help you to stay organized and keep clutter to a minimum.
Mirrors can be especially useful in such a space by reflecting that which can be seen outside of the window. This with further the illusion of a larger room and will again, help to bring the outside in.
Other reflective items, such as those which are metal, can be used to reflect the light and have it bounce off of them around the room. This will ensure that your space is filled with positive energy.
Air can quickly go stale in smaller areas so it is a good idea to make sure that the air is changed on a regular basis. This makes the likelihood of stale Chi and atmosphere less likely. A lack of windows may make this difficult, but by introducing a small electric fan you can stimulate and move energy around your space as you wish.
Chimes hung above the door and any windows will also help immensely as they are said to be very powerful in feng shui, by shifting energy.
If you choose to follow the tips above then your space should be light, bright, fresh, well organized and a joy to be in.
