replacement blades, etc. Check out the variety of shaving creams and gels available, letting her make the choice of which to purchase. Next stop ... lotion. As she picks out the lotion she wishes to use, keep in mind any skin conditions, such as dry skin, and encourage her to pick the moisturizer that will best meet her needs.
Go!
You know your daughter, and how much attention she will be comfortable receiving. For girls who require a more hands-off approach, simply ask them to slip into their swim suit bottoms in case they need assistance once they get started, then wait near the bathroom. For daughters that allow a more interactive approach, join them in the bathroom (with her still in a swim suit bottom) and answer questions as they arise. Either way, give some basic instructions before turning your child loose with a razor! Their first experience should be a good one.
Beware!
Instruct your girl to shave slowly, especially around her ankles and knees. I was told to apply the same amount of pressure I would use to shave a raw egg. Strange thought, but it worked. Encourage your girl to take her time, thus preventing the razor from sliding sideways, inflicting a more severe cut. If she shaves too closely, instruct her to wait before applying lotion, or it could sting and cause skin irritation.
Obstacles!
Once your girl has mastered shaving legs, you'll want to encourage her to shave under her arms and, if needed, her bikini line. While the same technique is used in these areas, more care is required to prevent cuts and nicks.
Keep it clean
When she's done with her shaving routine, show her how to clean or replace the razor. Instruct her to put all her equipment into the bucket or basket she chose as a caddy and put it away. Part of growing up is, after all, learning to take care of your stuff. Have her rinse the tub or sink to finish up.
Although shaving may seem difficult to her at first, remind her that it will become just another part of her routine before she knows it. And all with no knee-moustances to haunt her!
