"Just getting them to believe they had a chance to win the game is easier said than done" Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Football coach. Some ask if Weis should continue to coach at Notre Dame. Well, the answer is no. Now before you question why the answer is soon to come. There are many, many negatives about having Weis as the coach of the team. Some negatives are that he is used to professional football, he has hardly coached college football, and he has never played college football. One reason his team has suffered this season is because he let them have an easy preseason just as professional coaches do so that their star players won't get hurt. It is not the same in college because players need to continue to grow and learn. Second, Weis has never played college football and has only coached South Carolina for four years while receiving a master's degree. He does have four Super Bowl rings as an assistant coach in the NFL, but the NFL is so much different. At the time Notre Dame wanted to hire Weis Tyrone Willingham was the coach there. In Willingham's first season he led the team to a 10-3 record. His second year the team went 5-7, that is when Notre Dame alumni started complaining and wanted to get rid of Willingham. In his last season Willingham led the team to a 6-5 record and got fired, which paved the road for the recent Super bowl assistant coach Charlie Weis. Each year Notre Dame has gotten worst, this year ending the season with the worst record in the program's 119 year history, 3-9. This year is the first time since 1944 that Notre Dame has lost to two service academies, Air Force and Navy, they have not lost to Navy in 43 games. Only seven games into his Notre Dame career, Weis signed a 10 year $30 million extension, but Willingham was fired with two years still left on his contract. Now, in division one football there are 120 teams. In every category Notre Dame is way at the bottom. They are last in yards per game with 276.5, and are 110th in passing yards per game with only 16.7. They have a low 31.1% on 3rd down, and they have a mere 16.4 points per game. Teams such as LSU, Hawaii, and Kansas are averaging over 40 points per game. In addition, Jimmy Clausen the freshman quarterback that was supposed to be so good, has been sacked 34 times in only ten games, he only has seven touchdowns only three quarterbacks with less than that, and he has a 103.85 passer rating which is 115th in the nation. Plus, the "star running back" James Aldridge only averaged 3.8 yards per game and Notre Dame is averaged only 75.3 rushing yards per game which is 117th in the nation. All in all, Charlie Weis has failed his alma mater, Notre Dame, in his coaching career these last couple of years and the stats clearly shows Notre Dame should fire Weis and start fresh with all of the recruits coming up next season.
