Holiday tales and other Santa lies!
I used to love Xmas. It was a chance to get out of school for a week or two and get presents. As I grew older I became less enamored of the holiday. I wanted to list some special memories of the Christmas holiday and some reasons that, other than the birth of Our Lord, I have given up on its commercialization.
I believed so strongly Santa was real that I snuck out of bed one Xmas Eve, hid behind our living room sofa and waited for his arrival out of the chimney. I was 7 years old and was going to use this opportunity to prove his existence to my family and friends once and for all. I sat peeking out from under the couch just watching the fireplace as it crackled. How on earth could the Big Jolly Man land in such a hot smoky place? This had to be good some magical feat! 10PM came and went. 11PM flew by. But at Midnight, I heard some rustling upstairs. Mom and Dad had opened the attic. A few minutes later, they appeared in the living room with a load of wrapped presents. Then they went back for another load and then another. Finally I couldn't take it any longer. I popped up from my hiding place and stated, "Santa is never going to come if you keep popping in and out of here all night!". The result of a spanking and the order to march off to bed never resolved his existence that night.
My daughter was 4 when I had her write a letter to Santa with her wish list. She dictated the letter and I wrote her down all requests word for word. Then I sealed the letter, addressed it to the North Pole and then, much to my daughter's surprise, I placed a stamp on it. We walked hand in hand down the street to our local mailbox. I held the door and she slid the correspondence in the slot. When we got home, I expressed it was now time for her nap. She flat out refused. I reminded her that she just sent a letter to Santa. She replied, "So what?! That letter is going NOWHERE!" Ah, so young...so wise!
Xmas has become political these days. Here are some unwritten rules that have become commonplace:
1. If I send you a Xmas card and I get one back from you, then and only then will you be on my mailing list in the next coming years.
2. If I buy you a gift that costs $50+ and in return you send something from the dollar store, you will probably not get another gift in the coming years.
3. The only people who like getting a Xmas cards that is just a picture of you, your family, your kids or your pets are Parents. Your friends and definitely business associates
