Anyone can figure out how to use a razor quickly and expertly. This does not mean that you nothing to impart from your well of knowledge and experience in regards to shaving. On the contrary, guiding your daughter through her first shaving experience can be a sweet time of bonding which allows a certain right of passage that connects mother and daughter within a common sisterhood.
Before offering your first shaving tip, it is a wise idea to tread cautiously. Some girls are more comfortable than others concerning the signs of their budding womanhood than others. Some are more open, while others become more secretive. Some find the the signs of physical maturity, such as the growth of body hairs to be embarrassing and gross. Learning to read and understand the boundaries they project can help you to navigate the shoals and be of some help.
There are a couple of suggestions that I would like to offer to moms who are embarking upon inducting their teenage daughters into the the feminine world of shaving. Proceed with caution, and may every mother's prayer be with you.
Tip 1: TAKE HER SHOPPING
Don't just hand her a razor and mouth off a few techniques. Take your daughter shopping for her own supplies. In this setting, you can unobtrusively instruct her on choosing the best razors, moisturizers, and shaving creams. If you are not clear concerning just how ready she is, simply use the cover of getting shaving supplies for yourself and invite her to choose some for herself as well. In this way, you can keep from potentially doing the wrong thing, and you also allow her to set the pace. Before leaving the store, make sure you add some other things, such as, manicure, and pedicure supplies, stuff for facials, delicious body wash, and anything else you might need in order to accomplish the next suggestion.
Tip 2: HAVE A LADIES' SPA-NIGHT
Now that you have gathered all your supplies, plan a luxurious evening at home with your daughter. Send your gentlemen off on a male-bonding assignment while you and your teenage princess luxuriate and pamper your bodies at home. Give each other facials, do each others nails, sip some sparkling grape juice and talk about...GUYS.
*NOW, LET THE SHAVING BEGIN
The stage has been set. Your ladies night is a smashing success. It is time now, to pull out the razors. You moisten your legs with warm water from a basin or foot-bath if you are not using your bathtub. Next, you layer on some shaving cream or your favorite lather, then begin the shaving by pulling the razor in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Following along, your daughter does the same thing. It is not big deal, really. She has probably seen you do it a few times before. For good measure, you could offer to do one of her legs and invite her to do one of yours. While this is going on, you could simply suggest ways to avoid little cuts from the razor. Afterward, you both could compare smoothness and technique.
In all likelihood, your daughter probably already knows how to handle a razor. Even if she has never seen you shave, there is always television to supply the missing information and make a moot point of that lack. What then, is the value of teaching something that your teen probably already knows? The true value is in the time spent together. So, go ahead and take her shopping, set aside some time to pamper yourselves, and use shaving to invite your daughter into the inner sanctum of femininity as an equal. You will not just be teaching her shaving tips, but you will also be reinforcing your relationship, building up self-worth, and providing the basis for a good self- image.
