How to be eco-fashionable

considering the use of this fabric again.

If you ever made the mistake of planting bamboo in your garden, you know it grows quickly, is difficult to kill or remove, and is resistant to most insects. The plant can grow up to a foot per day and when it has reached its maturity has more bio-mass than a similar sized hardwood grove. Fabric made from bamboo is very breathable, anti-bacterial and feels silky smooth. It is a good choice for summer or running clothing, as it tends to keep you cooler.

Wool has been around for 10,000 years and has been one of the primary textiles for clothing, linens, carpeting and furnishings. Wool has built in UV protection; the fiber is very pliant and pliable and has the ability to retain warmth even when wet. It also very breathable and keeps you cool in the summer time. Wool is naturally hydrophilic as it tends to wick away moisture. Wool comes in a variety of colors and does not need synthetic dyes. Wool is almost entirely non-allergenic with the exception of those who are allergic to Lanolin. Wool is a sustainable fiber as it is shorn from free-roaming sheep each year.

Recycled fabric made from soda bottles has become a versatile, wrinkle free fabric found in everything from jeans to jackets. Patagonia has been marketing this eco-friendly material for several years.

Being the wary label reader, make sure you pay attention to synthetic clothing. Many clothing items such as polyester and nylon are made from petroleum products. Rayon is derived from wood pulp, which must go through a chemical digestion in order for the pulp to be created. Fabrics are dyed using chemicals that have a negative impact on the environment.

Being eco-fashionable is easy. These environmentally friendly products are being brought into the mainstream more each day. Patagonia, the Gap and even Levis are turning into the environmental fashion leaders of our time.
