Sinks, showers, and tubs can also become clogged. If this is the case you may try some of the above ideas to unclog those as well. The plunger would probably not be your best go to option for this type of clog so you may want to skip it altogether. Snakes, hot water, and nontoxic mixtures can still be used to attempt clog be gone. If your efforts fail check your drain traps. Traps are the curved parts of your pipes underneath your sink. Make sure to have a bucket ready when you separate the pipes to catch any junk that may fall out. Run your snake through the pipe with the bucket underneath to clear any additional clogs that don't just come out when you unscrew the pipe. Dial up the trusty plumber if all efforts still fail.
Once your drains are clog free you want to try to keep them that way. Every month or so pour or flush some type of septic tank cleaner through your drains. This will keep clogs from forming from buildup in your pipes. These are expensive investments but can save you a costly plumber bill. You can pick these items up at any local hardware store, Wal-Mart, etc. Use a trap when you shower or release the water from your bath especially if you have just washed your hair. These strainer type traps can be found at any hardware store, Wal-Mart, etc as well and may come in plastic to avoid scratching or metal. These are a great investment and are fairly inexpensive.
Most drain clogs can be avoided but for those that still find a way to haunt you try a do it yourself remedy before you call a costly plumber. Many times the clogs are not bad enough you cannot fix them yourself. If your efforts do not work and you are not much of a fix it yourself type individual call the plumber or at least get a second opinion before you get too involved in removing toilets, tubs, or pipes. Never attempt the work of a plumber without the knowledge or tools of the trade of a plumber. That is just a good word of advice!
