How to unclog a drain without chemicals

You awake and walk ever so slowly to the toilet. You are groggy and still half asleep but realize exactly what is going on when you see the tiny swirl of water as you flush and do not hear the swoosh sound through your pipes. You my friend have a clogged drain. If you own a pet or have a child you may need alternative sources other than chemicals to unclog your drain but what can you do that will work in a hurry?

You may want to attempt the use of the ugly device sitting in the corner by your toilet that you hoped you would never need to use. Yes that is right the plunger. No, no slow down don't just grab the plunger and plop it down in the nasty waters and angrily squish and swoosh with it. Take your time and slowly lower the plunger into the waters and gently squish the plunger and then pull back up in a faster motion. Be careful not to do this too fast or else you may wear the water on your favorite nightie. Repeat this motion a good 3-5 times before removing the plunger and attempting to flush. Once you have completed the first part of the exercise remove plunger, hopeful lay your hand on the toilet handle and give is a swift push. If you hear the pleasant swoosh through your pipes and the water exits the bowl the mission was a success if not you still have a problem and have a few options: first try the plunger again, second try another home method for unclogging drains or third call a local plumber. Wait, wait before you give up and make that call to the plumber here is another idea you may want to try.

You may try running hot water through your drain to see if the clog will loosen. Chances are if the plunger didn't work neither will hot water but it is worth a try before purchasing any type of tools or calling the plumber. You may also want to do online research to see if you can find any non-chemical mixtures others have used with successful outcomes to unclog drains. A do it yourself concoction may be just what you need.

Try the use of a drain Snake. Specific ones are made for toilets so that the bowl will not become scratched. Using a snake is simple if the blockage is inside the toilet and not the actual drainpipes. Run the snake through the toilet pushing as far as possible to dislodge the blockage. If when you flush you still do not get results the blockage may be in the pipes. Yes you can still fix the problem if you wish to do so but it will involve shutting off the water supply to the toilet, draining the bowl, and then removing the nuts and bolts
