Especially in this age of computers and video games, giving your kid the gift of the great outdoors in the form of a bike can be a wonderful thing. But how do you choose the right type? When deciding between a road bike and a mountain bike there are several factors to consider.
One is the type of environment your child will be riding in. Are there empty lots, fields, or woods near your house? If so you can just about bet that your child will ride their bike through them - regardless of the type you choose. So if that's the case, a mountain bike is almost certainly the answer - one with sturdy tires to withstand thorns and discarded nails. Will you be taking the bike camping? Again, go fo the mountain bike.
Do you live in a city with smoothly paved roads and little or no construction? If so, then a road bike is the ideal answer. Road bikes, as the name implies, are designed to function best on the pavement. They also typically have a larger frame but are lightweight, which makes them easy for children to handle.
Whatever your choice, your child will thank you. A bike provides a great sense of freedom and adventure to a kid, and of course independent transportation.
