My big day of giving birth to my first child was filled with comedy and drama. My whole pregnancy was a piece of cake, with very few glitches along the way. This was my first child and I didn't know what to expect, but because of the ease of the pregnancy I also expected an easy birth.
At 7am on a Saturday morning, I did not feel well. I had a back ache so I tried to go back to bed. I was only in bed for half an hour when I had to goto the bathroom. When I got to the bathroom I yelled for my husband to help me. I was bleeding everywhere and I was worried something was wrong, this didn't look or feel right. He drove us to the hospital and when we got there the staff was so laid back, I felt that they didn't understand the urgency of my situation. The staff remained so calm that I myself became quite calm ( I wonder if they planned that!)
I was admitted into my own room where a male nurse came into to introduce himself. When he left I told my husband there was no way I wanted a male nurse, he wouldn't understand me or the situation. Well that nurse was the most fantastic nurse I have met. I had to be induced because there was complications, and he explained everything every step of the way. My husband, the nurse and myself had quite the day together, joking around and really easing the situation.
I accepted an epidural because of the amount of pain I was in, and once that kicked in I was in heaven. I slept on and off during the day and my husband stayed at my side. At one point the nurse commented that he was finishing at 7:30pm so he wanted to see me deliver. He told me that I hadn't been to the bathroom for several hours so I either needed to try to go on my own or have a catheter. He explained that because of the epidural I may not be able to go as I had no feeling. I told him I could do it on my own, so my husband and the nurse helped me out of bed. Whoa, my legs were jelly and I had a hard time walking. I made it to the bathroom but as he had predicted I couldn't go. It was now 7pm and he sent another nurse in to drain my bladder. When she went to open me up, there was my child's head waiting to come out. They rushed me to the delivery room and my daughter was born at 7:25pm. The nurse joked that it was a good thing the baby didn't fall in the toilet went I tried to goto the bathroom.
Childbirth is fantastic when you are surrounded with the right people. I believe that a woman's memory of the event does get foggy because of the pain, but we can remember the best of it. My husband was by my side at every second and he witnessed the birth of our daughter which he tells everyone about. We are now planning on our next child already.
