Poetry: Death

Death Comes Calling

The long cold night shivers through
Dark shadows lurking there
Why Death have you come to visit
Not me, not now I fear

It is ~ you soulless bastard
I thought I had awhile
My life was still such fun to me
Each day another smile

I know I am no longer young
I cannot plead that case
In fact I've lived a bit and more
Please, pass onto another place

In fact as twilight beckoned

After a long hard working life
I thought it time to rest awhile
And enjoy time with my wife

Why do you come and search me out
I've lived a life that's true
I love, I help, I'm generous
What must I say or do?

Still I see you standing there
No emotion strikes your heart
But is there just a flicker
Some doubt that I might start

How spiteful you are dark angel
How cruel you are, I see
No bargain with the angel of death
The tragic deed must be

I see you nod your head
And smile that is the way
Don't dawdle then, be swift and clean
Let what will be this day

But wait, I've thought again
I think I'm going to fight
No easy prey you'll find in me
I don't deserve this, right?

Still no reason you have given
Why I shouldn't resist
This is so sudden, a real surprise
My loved ones I have not kissed

No, I'm not going to make it easy
I have much to say and do
You are going to have to persuade me well
For me to rise with you

My family mean the world to me
You have misjudged me badly today
Admit you have been impatient here
Just find some other prey

Tell me then, don't stand and stare
Impatience is not a virtue
Are you an angel, Death
A reason I demand you

His body rose, he reared his wings
I think I've sparked some passion
The night was dark but his eyes were bright
The time had come for action

But then he sank and sat down again
And looked me in the eye
There will be no fight tonight my friend
You shouldn't ask me why?

But Angel of Death, your missions wrong
How can I persuade you so
Another chance here on earth
That's all I ask, please go

Everyone has sinned a bit
I might not be a saint
But I tried so hard, I think I have
That is a just complaint

We must go now be quick my friend
I know you are a fighter
But when each time comes it's hard I know
The light is getting brighter

But I am fit, I'm strong
My family won't understand
Their loved one went so easily
So willingly in your hand

No I say again dark Angel
I think I'm going to fight
I owe them that, please understand
I'll not walk into that light

Please don't do this now
You will not win ~ no-one ever does
When your time comes, and I come calling
It's not that no-one loves

You've had your life,
A good one, that I have seen
One
