There has been much publicity given to the use of car seats for children and adults alike. This is generally good advice as research has demonstrated a reduction in fatal accidents as a result of their use. However, this normally protective device actually poses problems for young and premature babies.
The problem is this. Firstly young and premature babies have not yet fully developed the ability to hold their heads up straight. As a result this can make breathing more difficult with the head leaning forward.
This is compounded by the fact that young babies and even more so premature babies have no fully developed there normal breathing reflexes. As a result it appears that any prolonged sitting, places these infants at increased risk of respiratory problems and even stoppage of breath.
As a result it is recommended that travelling be limited for premature babies and very young term infants. When this is necessary they should be checked on at regular intervals. In fact it may be prudent to limit any activity that requires the infant to be in a sitting position for too long during those first few months. Many actually carry their babies around in the car seat or similar device; this is not wise.
