How to maintain a humidor

Humidors are meant to keep cigars at the right humidity level to keep them moist and so that they can mature and give off a great aroma. The best humidity level should be between 62 and 75%. It is critical for a humidor to have a humidity regulator so that it cannot rise above 75% for the purpose so that is water was place inside it won't evaporate immediately and dry up the cigars. If the humidity were to go above 85% mold would appear.

You should refill the humidor with distilled water(distilled so that bacteria won't appear) about every month, depends on if the humidity level gets to 62% or below and how many time you open it. If the humidor is new you might have to refill it more then once a month. You should use a digital hygrometer, since it is the most accurate, to determine if you need to refill the humidor. If during the summer the humidor should reach above 75% you should leave it open, or keep it in an air conditioned room. Keep your humidor from direct sunlight and away from heater during winter months to keep from warping.

If you should find that you have a tobacco beetle infestation you should take all of you cigar, placed them in a sealed plastic bag and place in freezer for at least 72 hours to kill the beetles and larvae. Clean the humidor with a cotton rag and distilled water. Thaw the cigars in refrigerator for a day to prevent shock, before placing in humidor.

These are just the basics to up keeping a humidor, I hop that your humidor has a long and lasting life.
