to weight loss and good health. This is the same administration that passed a "guidance" which classifies vitamins, minerals and herbs as "untested drugs. The FDA is a regulatory administration interested in supporting the pharmaceutical industry and monitoring healthy food handling and safety in areas of food production.
As consumers, we should not believe everything we hear about products on the market, not because of their claims and that they might not work, but because of the potentially dangerous side-effects these drugs can have with people. A lot of money is involved in the weight loss market place, and the best interest of the consumer is not always put first. The weight-loss market creates over a billion dollars annually. When we take a good look at the statistics, it is very clear that weight loss supplements benefit the company and not the consumer. Here is why.
Let's take a look at the top five diet fads on the market as of 2007. Here are some things you need to know before you swipe your card and start popping those magic pills... The holiday season is here, though if you purchase these miracle drugs for the sake of eating more and losing weight, the only thing getting lightened may be your checking account.
Nancee Vander Pluym, a nutritionist at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center states, "It's not (diet supplements) regulated by the FDA. There is no such thing as a magic pill to lose weight, and users need to know they're playing Russian roulette with their health. It is a myth that you can take something for a couple of days and it's going to increase your metabolism by five percent."
Medical awareness website WebMD.com lists the top five diet scams consumers should watch for.
A lot of supplements claim to boost metabolism, metabolism being the rate at which calories are expended by your body. This is often an untrue statement, as many drugs on the market for weight loss contain high amounts of ephedrine, caffeine, taurine, and many more ingredients not needed in high amounts by the body. Too much of anything is not a good thing. What these ingredients/chemical actually do states Nancee Pluym, is "raise blood pressure and increase the odds of heart attack."
The second thing to look for are products which claim to block fat and or carbohydrates. These products are potentially dangerous because they also make it hard for the body to break down nutrients, resulting in diarrhea, bloating and gas. It is better to avoid eating certain foods completely
