While I believe that an alarm system does help for out of town trips, I would say that having a dog or a few dogs is much better and more effective than an alarm system for when you are home, especially a bigger dog. An alarm system alarms you that there is someone in your home who should not be there and it alarms the police and the alarm company as well, however, most alarm systems take a minute or so to alarm law enforcement and then depending on how far or close an officer is, it could take a while longer than it should for the intruder to be caught. By that time the intruder could have hurt or killed someone or gotten away already. However, with a dog, the chances of your home being broken into are slimmer because dogs are quick and can be vicious when they are trying to protect their owners and their home. In addition, most people are afraid of bigger dogs and realize that they can be territorial and protective therefore people are less apt to break into a home with a dog. Also, alarms require a code or a key. If that code or key is stolen any person can easily come into your home without you or anyone else ever knowing, but if you own a dog or two you will almost always know when someone other than yourself or your family are in your home because if the dog isn't barking, growling, or snarling, they are sniffing and acting different than they normally would act.
