God blessed me with one girl out of the three children He gave me and right now she is only two years old. However, I know that I am looking forward to a whole slew of topics that I am not looking forward to facing when she enters into puberty, one of which being the topic of shaving.
It's not so much the act as it is what it represents. It will be one of the first signs that my little girl is no longer so little and is entering into a different realm of her life; the realm of the dreaded teen years!
When I think these thoughts, I realize that I will have to reach far into my memory bank and lean on my first experiences to help guide her along through her learning processes.
And when I think about my own first experience with shaving, I didn't even let on to my mom that I was planning on attempting it. My cousin and I decided one summer day at the ripe age of eleven that we were ready, took a bar of soap and a razor and shaved EVERYTHING with hair. No part of my body (except for my head) had a bit of hair, but I did have a few razor burns and nicks to show for my ill fated attempt at adulthood.
So tip number one is make sure that shaving is necessary. Be certain that they understand that once they put that razor to their legs, there is no turning back. The hair will start growing in quicker and thicker each and every time they shave and after the initial partaking of this right of passage, it is not a choice, it is a chore.
Tip number two is the how. Dry shaving or shaving with soap is not only bad for their skin, but it makes also makes it more likely for burns and cuts to occur. Recommend to them that they use a foaming shaving gel with vitamin e and/or aloe. After making sure that the chosen area (hopefully just their legs for now) are properly moistened and then covered with the gel, you can instruct them to take their razor and start at the base of the leg, working their way upward which should be against the direction the hair is growing. This is the only way to get real results.
Once all the hair has been removed, take a warm wash cloth and gently wipe away and residue left behind from the shaving gel. If they notice some stubborn pieces of hair that refused to leave their posts the first time, reapply some gel to that area and shave away! But under no circumstances should they ever just take the razor and dry shave because they think it's only one or two pieces. They will still get a razor burn that will make them wish they had just used the gel.
Now there are many hair removal creams on the market, and I've tried most of them, but I can't say anything good about any of them. Unfortunately, unless you would like to pay for a body wax, I have found that the old fashioned way is the most effective, especially if you're a woman who was blessed with thicker hair growth than most.
Hopefully this article has been insightful for those of you who are closer to the puberty stages than I am. I wish you the best and would just like to tell you that if you rely on YOUR memory bank and reach into the crevices of your childhood memories, you can make this the first of many special first experiences between you and your daughter.
