Worship: A love relationship

The Westminster Catechism states the sole end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. Therefore, worship goes beyond a love relationship, it is a relationship of servant to master. True, we as servants love our master, and Christ is the heavenly bridegroom, but worship goes beyond love to service.

In true worship, we reflect God's image as a creative God, a merciful God, a loving God, and a generous God. We also reflect God's passion for justice, a passion so great that he sent his only Son to die on the Cross rather than allow our sin to stand unpunished. Worship goes beyond singing, beyond words, beyond prayer, beyond even the offering. Worship is our daily lives offered to God in our actions and our work for justice towards the oppressed.

If I am in the right relationship to God, I can worship right now while I am writing, while I do dishes, while I knit, while I see patients in a county clinic, and while I sleep. Everything I do can be worship. Yes, it is an expression of my love for God, but it is also an expression of my service towards him.

To me, glorifying God goes beyond love. It encompasses love. But our love relationship must extend to our neighbor, as even Christ said. That is the second great commandment.
