THE GREATNESS OF GIVING
I actually agree with both sides of this debate. Giving IS receiving, and receiving IS giving. When you are giving with the spirit of TRULY not expecting something in return, but from a natural outpouring of benevolence deep within the core of your life, this is true altruism. Acts of true altruism always return to the giver in positive unexpected ways. It is an act of unselfish appreciation to the recipient. It brings a like reaction back to the person giving. It's all cause and effect. If something is given from an feeling of obligation or expecting to gain something in return, it's pointless and better to not give at all.
On the other side of the debate to accept is also to give. If some one is sincerely offering something to you, whether a gift, help when you are in need, or even a simple compliment, accepting it can give that person great happiness. It also opens up a part of yourself that transcends the ego that sometimes makes it difficult to accept from others. How many times has somebody complimented you and it makes you feel uncomfortable or you may even disagree with them. It comes down to self-esteem. To be able to know yourself, your good points and weaknesses, without judgment, but just as the reality of being human, helps you to accept the good offered to you.
Your greatest gift is to be able to give joyfully and to receive with that same joy. Then everyone is the better for it.
