Feng shui tips for the home office

When using Feng Shui to design your home office, focus on enhancing creative and productive energies. This can be done in many ways, including your choice of color, furniture, and object placement.

In choosing a room for your home office, designate a space that is separate from the daily household. This allows you to distance yourself from your family life and focus energy while working.

If you are unable to devote an entire room to a home office, partition your space with room dividers.

For optimal energy flow, select office furniture with rounded corners. If your furniture has sharp edges, arrange the pieces so that none of the corners will be pointing through you as you work. You can also place a fabric runner over the furniture tops to soften sharp corners.

Your desk is the most important piece of furniture in your home office. A large, flat workspace will encourage open thinking, but an overly large desk can be overwhelming. If you use a computer in your work, plan a desk at the proper height and with features such as a keyboard tray to make you comfortable while you work.

Your desk chair should be comfortable and provide the necessary support. Saving money by skimping on a desk chair will cost you in productive energy. Remember that the focus of Feng Shui is promote positive energy flow. Choose a chair that is not only comfortable physically, but one that makes you feel confident as well.

Organization is key in planning your home office. Feng Shui philosophy teaches that clutter drains positive energy. Look around your home office. Do you need shelves or drawers to organize your work? Does the desk allow for running electronic cords and cables out of sight? Plan adequate space for file cabinets and other storage furniture. By planning ahead, you avoid the accumulation of energy draining clutter.

Furniture placement, especially the placement of your desk, is important. The best place for a desk is in the command position. In Feng Shui, the command position is a location where you can see the door, but are not directly in front of it. This enhances your strength and security. If you must sit with your back to the entrance, hang a mirror over your desk to reflect the door.

Feng Shui teaches that color choices affect mood and energy. Certain colors are better in some environments than they would be in other rooms. In a home office, recommended colors include yellow, red, purple, and blue. These are all colors that raise productive energy and are thought to help harmonize work relationships.

A home office is the ideal place to display mementos that symbolize your accomplishments. Diplomas, awards, and photographs that remind you of previous successes will encourage creativity as you work. Photographs and keepsakes that are personally inspiring will increase your energy. Frame and display sentimental items such as a graduation card from your parents or a drawing from your children.

Water elements work well to enhance your career energy. Pictures of water scenes, tabletop fountains, and water walls will promote a positive environment. An aquarium adds strong, positive energy, as long as the fish receive proper care and maintenance.

By incorporating simple Feng Shui principles, you can increase the productivity and positive energy in your home office. Stay on top of the clutter, surround yourself with inspiring objects, and you will have a stimulating workspace in your own home.
