Chlorination or simply the adding of chlorine to water is extensively used in many water treatment facilities primarily to disinfect or kill harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria. Places such as mining sites and camps must have their water supply safe for human consumption; chlorine in tablet forms comes in handy.
Swimming pools and spas are required by the Environmental Protection Agency to keep the water supply free from contaminants or harmful microorganisms by installing a chlorinator that continuously add a controlled rate of chlorine. The chlorine level is monitored and adjusted when necessary to avoid possible irritants to the eyes, nose, and skins of swimmers or spa users.
The household use of chlorine in liquid form for laundry and disinfectant for bathrooms, toilets, and kitchen sinks should not be forgotten. This would be high concentration of chlorine where care should be taken in using the familiar brand called Clorox.
It should be a good idea to have chlorine tablets available to the public for use in the household. No one knows when an emergency happens where the water treatment facility in the area announces that we need to boil our drinking water. Using chlorine tablets instead of boiling the water for drinking is a step towards going green.
